OPITO funds a fortnight of STEM events at Aberdeen Science Centre

OPITO is funding a fortnight of free events at Aberdeen Science Centre this October. Over 600 P5 to P7 pupils from 19 schools across the region will participate in OffshoreWind4Kids sessions, which will put children’s STEM skills to the test through building and testing their own floating wind turbine.

The rapid acceleration in the development of offshore wind in the UK has created significant demands for people across various disciplines in the sector. Roles will be required at all stages of the project lifecycle, from design and construction to operations and maintenance. It’s critical that we begin teaching children from an early change about the world of STEM and energy.

The programme of activity coincides with Renewable UK’s Floating Offshore Wind 2023, taking place in Aberdeen, UK on 4 and 5 October. The OPITO team looks forward to connecting with colleagues in the global floating wind industry.

“After the success of our first OffshoreWind4Kids workshops in Aberdeen in 2022, it's brilliant to return and give more young people the chance to get hands-on experience with offshore wind.

Access to STEM education is crucial for our journey towards building a net-zero workforce of the future. Initiatives like OffshoreWind4Kids and the valuable work of Aberdeen Science Centre are critical if we are to inspire the estimated 130,000 more people required to join the sector to realise shared net zero ambitions.

By participating in this free event, we hope children feel excited about the limitless opportunities a career in energy can offer.”

Vice President of Energy Transition, Faye Sherriffs

In addition to the schools’ activities programme, there is a public session on Saturday, 7 October. Find out more on Aberdeen Science Centre’s website.

OPITO is committed to STEM through it’s My Energy Future programme, funding a range of STEM events globally each year. This summer, OPITO funded an OffshoreWind4Kids tour across England, UK. The educational programme visited Port of Blyth, Merseyside and Norwich.

Next month, My Energy Future LIVE will take place in Kuala Lumpur in partnership with Petrosains, The Discovery Centre, as part of OPITO Global.
