Course overview

Our Helicopter publications are used throughout the oil and gas industry and form part of a number of our safety training standards.

Working alongside industry, the newly updated versions of the Helicopter Landing Officers Handbook and the Helicopter Refuelling Handbook include the latest information on CAP 437 and the Oil and Gas UK Helicopter guidelines.

These best practice guidelines assist with both the Helicopter Landing Officer role and the Helideck Assistant role.

    Helicopter Landing Officers Handbook - 13th Edition (2022)

    The handbook covers:

    Helicopter Landing Officer’s requirements - The Responsibilities defined by Regulation and organisational duties offshore

    Helidecks checks - It is the HLOs responsibility to ensure that the helideck and associated equipment is in a suitable condition for helicopter operations

    Helicopter communications and meteorology - The HLO needs to understand the communication system between the installation of the helicopter

    Helideck operations - The HLO reports to the OIM for the control of helicopter operations in relation to the installation

    Helideck loading - The HLO is responsible for all those engaged in operations on or near the helicopter landing, loading and unloading operation

    Dangerous goods - Assisting in ensuring the safe and efficient transhipment of cargo, the HLO must adhere to regulations concerning the carriage of dangerous goods by air

    The handbook covers:

    Purpose of Helicopter Refuelling manual, regulations and publications - This section covers the responsibilities which are defined by regulation and draws a distinction between these and other duties which may be allocated to the HLO within the organisational arrangements of each offshore installation

    Aviation fuel - This section covers an overview of the composition of fuel, standards and testing required to ensure that only acceptable and on-specification fuel is presented for use on offshore refuelling installations.

    Offshore fuelling systems - This section presents an overview of offshore refuelling system layout and functionality.

    Filtration, water separation and detection - This section covers the basic principles of design and operating principals of filter vessels installed within an offshore refuelling system, focusing on the mandatory Filter/Water Separator as well as covering supplementary filtration methods.

    Routine operations and maintenance - This section covers the responsibilities, which are defined by regulation, relating to maintenance requirements of the HLO in order to ensure the refuelling system remains in a safe and operable condition.
