Taiwanese training provider signs a commitment to develop an all-energy workforce

Today, at Wind Energy Asia, (08.03.23), Taiwanese national and international approved training provider Marine Technology Innovation Centre (MTIC), has signed an agreement with global safety and skills body for the energy industry, OPITO. This signals MTIC’s commitment to developing an integrated all-energy workforce.

MTIC is operated by Metal Industries Research & Development Centre, (MIRDC), located in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, and delivers offshore training on behalf of industry and government. It is a nationally and internationally approved training provider with a vision to develop national competence to international standards in the offshore energy sector.

Dr Wei-Te Chen, Director, representing MTIC and MIRDC, stated: “MTIC announce today that it is working towards OPITO accreditation. We look forward to expanding our services, in the renewable sector, and collaborating with OPITO both in their core standards for the basic survival including helicopter escape standard, (also known as ‘BOSIET’), and in promoting and offering the Energy Transition Qualifications to the workforce of local and international operators in Taiwan.”

OPITO is the leading global skills and qualification body for the energy sector with offices in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Americas, Middle East and United Kingdom. Each year, more than 450,000 people are trained to industry standards. For over 50 years, it has worked with industry stakeholders to develop a safe and skilled energy workforce by driving global standards and qualifications, creating workforce development solutions and leading dialogue with industries and governments.

Richard Roberts, Senior Vice President for Strategic Development at OPITO, stated: “OPITO is delighted to be working with MIRDC to accredit their programmes to OPITO’s international standards. Ensuring the workforce is safe and skilled is a core component of OPITO’s strategy. We are looking forward to working with MIRDC and expanding their provision of energy transition qualifications to support Taiwan as it aims to develop 20% of its power from renewables by 2025.”

OPITO launched its suite of four energy transition qualifications in 2022. Introduction to Hydrogen, Introduction to CCUS, Introduction to Oil & Gas and Introduction to Wind Power, provide key knowledge of emerging net-zero specialisms for technicians and others looking to up-skill or move between relevant energy industries.
