From Apprentice to Offshore Installation Manager: Craig Davidson's Inspiring Journey with APTUS

Are you looking for a dynamic and rewarding career in the energy sector? Meet Craig Davidson, a former APTUS apprentice who is now an Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) for Equinor. His journey is a testament to the incredible opportunities that an APTUS apprenticeship can offer, and we want to share his story to inspire and encourage the next generation of energy professionals.

The Beginning: A Passion for Energy

Craig's journey began in 2001 when he decided to join the APTUS (previously known as OGTAP) apprenticeship programme. He was leaving school and had the option to go to university but wanted something more hands-on in engineering. After hearing about the opportunities in the offshore industry from friends, he found that APTUS was the best option for gaining a solid apprenticeship experience.

Throughout his apprenticeship, Craig was exposed to a wide range of technical skills and industry knowledge. The structured training and assessment standards ensured he was well-prepared to meet the demands of the energy industry. From safety protocols to advanced technical skills, the APTUS programme equipped him with the tools he needed to succeed.

One of Craig's proudest moments was completing the apprenticeship programme, feeling a sense of achievement for finishing the college-based side and then experiencing the brand-new world of working offshore. This combination of learning and practical experience was invaluable.

After completing his apprenticeship as an Instrument Technician in 2005, Craig's career progressed rapidly. After working in this role for over 5 years, he then became a maintenance team leader, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day maintenance team comprising of all trades.

Seeking new challenges, Craig joined Equinor as a senior instrument technician, working on a new project from design, construction and commissioning phases that allowed him to work in Norway, across Europe, and South Korea. He transitioned into a Maintenance Supervisor role as the new platform came into operation, before later moving into the position of Offshore Installation Manager (OIM)..

Craig's journey from apprentice to OIM is impressive, but what makes him even more proud is his ability to support current apprentices. Throughout his career,  he has worked with several apprentices in the APTUS programme, giving back just like the mentors who helped him during his apprenticeship. This full-circle moment is incredibly rewarding for him.

The skills and knowledge Craig gained during his apprenticeship have become second nature in his daily work. He developed a mindset of continuously building on his knowledge to progress further in his career. The structured and comprehensive nature of the APTUS programme ensures that apprentices are well-equipped to handle the complexities of their roles.

Encouragement for Future Apprentices

Craig encourages anyone considering the APTUS programme to apply. He believes it can lead to a successful career in the industry due to its well-structured nature and broad knowledge of the industry, equipping apprentices with many transferable skills.

Craig's advice for current apprentices is simple: "What you are learning here is fundamental to making you a better technician. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it, and the better technician you will be."

Craig emphasises the close-knit team culture in the offshore environment, where everyone supports one another. He highlights the positive impact of seeing more females joining the workforce, which has led to a better dynamic and mix within the industry, and some of the best technicians he has worked alongside.

Craig’s journey from apprentice to Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) is a testament to the opportunities and career progression made possible through the APTUS apprenticeship programme. If you are passionate about the energy sector and looking for an apprenticeship that offers real-world experience, hands-on training, and a pathway to a successful career, the APTUS apprenticeship programme is for you.
