Introducing OPITO’s Train the Trainer Qualification: Strengthening Competence in Safety‑Critical Industries

OPITO is pleased to announce the launch of the Train the Trainer Vocational Qualification (Q000586), a new qualification designed to strengthen the quality, consistency and professionalism of training delivery across global safety critical industries.

As organisations continue to build internal capability and invest in workforce development, the need for well‑prepared trainers has never been more important. Employers are increasingly seeking structured, competency ‑based qualifications that support individuals to progress from underpinning knowledge to demonstrated workplace competence in planning, delivering, assessing and evaluating training.

The Train the Trainer Vocational Qualification provides a clear, structured pathway through two mandatory units, completed in sequence:

  • Unit 1: Train the Trainer (OGOS–SQ10) – a knowledge-based unit that develops the essential theoretical foundation for effective training practice.
  • Unit 2: Train the Trainer Workplace Evidence (OGOS–SQ11) – a workplace competence unit that requires learners to produce authentic, mapped workplace evidence demonstrating safe, inclusive and compliant training practice.

Key areas of focus across the qualification include:

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a trainer
  • The training cycle and programme/session design principles
  • Learning needs analysis and stakeholder engagement Inclusive practice and learner engagement
  • Assessment principles, feedback and approaches to quality assurance
  • Safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion, confidentiality, and governance
  • Reflective practice and continuous improvement

Assessment is designed to be fair, consistent and defensible across all OPITO-approved Centres. Evidence must be valid, authentic, sufficient, current and reliable, and clearly mapped to the relevant learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

This qualification reinforces OPITO’s commitment to supporting a safer and more competent workforce by helping to ensure those responsible for training others are equipped with the knowledge and competence required to deliver structured, consistent and compliant learning experiences.

“Good training builds confidence - and good trainers build good outcomes. At OPITO, our goal is to strengthen confidence in training by developing trainers who put the learner first. This qualification is an important next step- supporting the industry with trainers who can deliver engaging training that translates into performance on the job.”
