Tropical Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (T-HUET) with Initial Sea Survival
Introducing the new T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival Standard
At OPITO, we continuously evolve our Product portfolio to meet the dynamic needs of the energy industry. Our latest addition, the Tropical Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (T-HUET) with Initial Sea Survival, has been developed in response to industry feedback and aims to enhance offshore safety for personnel traveling by helicopter in tropical environments, particularly for the wind energy and oil and gas operations in tropical water regions.
Below, you'll find answers to key questions about this new standard, including its objectives, duration, validity, and how centres can apply for approval.
What is the new T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival Product?
The Tropical Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (T-HUET) with Initial Sea Survival product introduces learners who intend to travel to and from offshore installations and vessels by helicopter in a tropical environment. It provides specific training for pre-flight and in-flight requirements and equips learners with the basic emergency response knowledge and skills required in the event of a helicopter emergency – with a specific focus on escaping following ditching and sea survival techniques.
The objectives of the training are to:
(a) Demonstrate, in a simulated environment, that they can use the safety equipment and follow procedures in preparing for, and during helicopter emergencies – with particular focus on escaping from a helicopter following ditching.
(b) Demonstrate initial sea survival techniques.
How does the new T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival differ from the current T-HUET standard?
The T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival focuses on the methods and procedures for evacuation and the knowledge and practical assessment for helicopter evacuation and initial sea survival techniques
This differs from the existing T-HUET, where there is also the requirement for the assessment of muster and actions upon boarding a survival craft (Totally Enclosed Motor-Propelled Survival Craft - TEMPSC) and a marine liferaft.
What is the expected duration of the T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival training?
Guided learning hours are 6 hours 30 minutes.
What led to the creation of the new T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival?
OPITO received feedback from industry stakeholders across the energy mix who demonstrated the need for a global industry standard that covers Tropical Helicopter Escape and Sea Survival outcomes, without the need for TEMPSC and marine liferaft activities. This standard will support safety-critical industries where the TEMPSC is not the primary means of facility emergency abandonment or is covered by existing training standards.
OPITO is extending its existing HUET portfolio to ensure that a variety of Products exist to fulfil all stakeholders' expectations. It will be particularly supportive for wind energy and oil and gas operations in tropical water regions.
Will the new product replace the current T-HUET product?
The T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival does not replace the current T-HUET product. The new product offers an additional option for those who do not need TEMPSC or marine liferaft activities as part of their T-HUET training.
The standard codes are:
- T-HUET - 5195
- T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival - 5192.
Who is required to take the T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival training?
Personnel should check with their employer, the operator or other stakeholder as per legal requirements, for acceptance of T-HUET or T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival to travel to specific offshore assets.
How long is the T-HUET with Initial Sea Survival training valid for?
The training is valid for 4 years.
When will these changes go live?
These changes are now live, with the new product available to view in The HUB.
Do centres that currently hold approval of 5195. T-HUET need to apply for a new approval?
Centres will be required to apply for approval. Approved centres can do this by applying through The HUB. OPITO will then complete a prior recognition form and review the application using our risk-based approach.
I have more questions about the introduction of this new Product. Who can I contact?
