Introduction to the Oil and Gas industry

The programme gives an overall picture of industry-specific functionality together with an appreciation of the challenges to produce hydrocarbons and an understanding of where the different job roles are involved.

Course overview

OPITO’s ‘Introduction to the Oil and Gas Industry’ e-Learning course is designed to support the induction of newcomers to the industry - giving individuals, looking to work in technical and commercial roles, the opportunity to explore the world of oil and gas in an interactive and stimulating environment.

The programme gives an overall picture of industry-specific functionality together with an appreciation of the challenges to produce hydrocarbons and an understanding of where the different job roles are involved.

There are six knowledge modules and a final assessment:

Module 1: Characteristics of Oil and Gas
Module 2: Exploration, Surveys and Drilling Rights
Module 3: Drilling Rigs and Drilling a Well
Module 4: Exploration and Development Drilling
Module 5: Production and Work-over
Module 6: Oil and Gas Transportation and Decommissioning

At the end of all 6 modules the learner will complete an assessment in which a score of 80% or above must be attained to pass. If the learner fails to pass the assessment on the first attempt they will be given a second attempt.

If the learner passes on either the first or the second attempt they will receive a certificate of completion which they will be able to print.

Pre-Requisites

There are no academic qualifications, skills or experience pre-requisites for entry to the Introduction to Oil and Gas Industry course.

The course is designed to give a newcomer to the industry an opportunity to explore the oil and gas industry from the formation of hydrocarbons to the decommissioning of installations.

Duration

OPITO recommend 2-4 hours to complete the course. It can be completed sporadically or in one sitting. The learner will have access to the course for 30 days from the purchase date.

Registration

To register and enrol onto the OPITO Introduction to the Oil and Gas Industry e-Learning course the learner must purchase access to the learning materials. Once payment is made, an email will be sent with a link to the Learning Management System, along with a personal username and password.

Materials

Module 1: Characteristics of Oil and Gas (25 minutes to complete)

'Characteristics of Oil and Gas' looks at the formation of oil and gas beneath the sea bed. By the end of this module learners will understand the basic characteristics of crude oil and natural gas, global hydro carbon reserves and have an understanding of the rock structure in which they are formed. The module also covers the industrial and commercial uses of oil and gas.

Module 2: Exploration, Surveys and Drilling Rights (25 minutes to complete)

'Exploration, Surveys and Drilling Rights' looks at how oil was discovered, mapping and licensing production. By the end of this module learners will know more about exploration of oil and gas, surveying of underground formations and the licensing of drilling rights.

Module 3: Drilling Rigs and Drilling a Well (30 minutes to complete)

'Drilling Rigs and Drilling a Well' covers the basic technical aspects of drilling rigs and looks at how a well is drilled. At the end of this module learners will have basic knowledge of the various types of drilling rigs and an understanding of the drilling deck and drilling shack, as well as the roles of key personnel working there. Learners will also learn about the elementary parts of the well drilling process including the drilling system, the drilling derrick and the drilling string.

Module 4: Exploration and Development Drilling (25 minutes to complete)

'Exploration and Development Drilling' looks at the differences between exploration drilling and development drilling, and examines the corporate decision making stages before a field is developed. At the end of this module learners will have a basic understanding of some of the technical equipment that is used in the drilling process. The module will also cover field development with the types of platform and trees available to operators as well as examining horizontal drilling and well perforation.

Module 5: Production and Work-over (30 minutes to complete)

'Production and Work-over' looks in more detail at methods of exporting oil and gas from a platform, as well as the production and process systems offshore. We also examine the care of offshore equipment and the personal Health and Safety environment. In this module learners will learn the difference between pipelines, flow-lines and risers and have a basic understanding of the equipment used in the production and process system. Learners will become familiar with the term ‘Work-over’ and be aware of the provision for inspection, repair and maintenance of equipment. Learners will also be briefed on some of the legislation and statutory requirements imposed on operators by UK authorities in maintaining and securing offshore installations, and basic principles of Offshore Health and Safety.

Module 6: Oil & Gas Transportation and Decommissioning (25 minutes to complete)

'Oil & Gas Transportation and Decommissioning' covers an overview of pipeline management from platform to pipeline termination as well as offloading hydrocarbons from FPSO’s to tankers. We will also look at elements of decommissioning. At the end of this module learners will have a basic understanding of how oil and gas is transported from a number of offshore installations to land, and have a greater understanding of the issues surrounding the decommissioning of offshore oil and gas installations.

Final Assessment (20 minutes to complete)

You will be presented with 20 multiple choice questions relating to the the 6 modules. You must attain 80% or more to pass the course.

Who is this for?

Open to all.
