Charging of Accumulators and Fixed Gas Cylinders - Awareness

OPITO Standard

Product Code: 9050

Who is this Product for?

This Product is for personnel across the energy sector who require a knowledge and understanding of nitrogen charging activities. This awareness is primarily focused on static pressure equipment which uses the stored energy of a gas (mainly Nitrogen) to provide:

(a) An emergency power (pressure) supply in the event of a power failure (b) Shock or pulsation dampening to protect equipment against pressure surges (c) Leakage compensation to maintain system pressure and/or make up lost fluid (d) Thermal expansion to absorb pressure differences due to temperature variation in a closed hydraulic circuit (e) Noise reduction in a hydraulic circuit caused by relief valves, pumps or other circuit generated noise. (f) A pressure source used as a propellant for a fire-fighting agent.

Note: This awareness training excludes the charging of  marked Gas Cylinders which are used to charge the above items of fixed pressure equipment. Gas cylinders which are  marked shall only be re-charged by an authorised person or organisation.

What does this Product cover?

The aim of the Charging of Accumulators and Fixed Gas Cylinders Awareness standard is to introduce Learners to the hazards and risks associated with nitrogen charging activities, the key components of nitrogen charging equipment and the safe operation and maintenance of nitrogen charging equipment.

The objectives of the Charging of Accumulators and Fixed Gas Cylinders Awareness standard are that Learners will be able to understand:

(1) Properties of air and nitrogen (2) Hazards and risks associated with nitrogen charging activities (3) Applicable regional legislation and guidance (4) Key components of nitrogen charging equipment (5) Safe operation and maintenance of nitrogen charging equipment (6) Emergency operating procedures and actions to take in the event of an emergency (7) PPE requirements (8) Accumulator Function (9) Accumulator Type (10) Typical Maintenance Activities (11) Typical Accumulator Configuration
