OPITO believes that the way to encourage the future leaders of the Energy industry and the next generation of engineers and scientists is to encourage young people to get involved in hands-on STEM activities that are engaging, entertaining and informative.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has swept the globe and enforced many countries into lockdown and education and learning facilities to shut - it has become more apparent than ever that digital technology for education, learning and training are imperative to ensuring young people of all ages have access to the resources they need.

Here you will find a list of useful resources to STEM activities that can be carried out at home. With the aim to inspire, challenge and bring a little fun, OPITO is certain that there is something for all ages to learn!

GSC at Home - Glasgow Science Centre are LIVE every day at 10am on their YouTube channel and across their social networks to bring Science right into your home. Discover a range of activities as they inspire all ages.

Aberdeen Science Centre - The team have developed a programme of activities including 'Stay at Home' and 'Summer of STEM', available on their Facebook page

  • Summer of STEM - With fun experiments and activities including making a catapult, kitchen chemistry and virtual chats with NASA engineers
  • Stay at Home Science Creating a cloud in a jar and extracting DNA from a strawberry

STEM.org.uk - Bespoke collections of hand-picked resources have been created to give you new ideas and inspiration.

OGTC - The 'Inspire20' programme provides young people with inspiring educational and career talks focused on the energy transition and career opportunities. The series of webinars begin 27 May.

Learn By Design - There are a range of activity packs to download, some will be experiments, some are documents with questions and answers and some are fun colouring in sheets and word searches, a whole range to suit a range of levels and skills.

Science Buddies - Explore experiments, engineering challenges and demonstrations with these fun hands-on STEM activities! Materials are easy to find, most activities take an hour or less, and the STEM learning is limitless.

Scottish Council for Development and Industry - Our friends at SCDI have put together a menu of tried and tested downloadable STEM challenges such as 'STEM in a Shoebox', 'Mysterious Maths', 'Floating Fun' and much more!

British Science Association - Library of science-based activities for children to do in line with the national curriculum during the lockdown period. The library includes packs of Star and Superstar-level activities for children between five and 11 years old, has been created to help parents support their children with activities that have a focus on science.

Nasa - Build it, solve it, launch it, colour it, play it, read it! Discover a huge range of activities and challenges on the Nasa website.
