Piper Alpha Memorial Safety Scholarship

On the night of 6 July 1988, 167 men tragically lost their lives following an explosion on the Piper Alpha oil platform, in what remains the world’s worst offshore oil disaster.

OPITO’s Piper Alpha Memorial Safety Scholarship was created to provide a legacy for the victims of the disaster, ensuring those who are responsible for taking the industry forward into the next stage of evolution are fully aware of the need for the highest levels of safety.

The annual scholarship is open to all postgraduate students undertaking MSc studies relevant to the oil and gas industry at the University of Aberdeen and the Robert Gordon University in Scotland.

Students are required to submit dissertations focused on safety within the oil and gas industry which are then assessed by a panel of judges, including representatives from both Robert Gordon University and the University of Aberdeen.

More information can be found on each university website.

Previous applicant dissertations can be accessed in the media section.
