Skills policy in Scotland is a devolved responsibility to the Scottish Government and OPITO works with industry partners to ensure the skills needs of oil and gas are identified and addressed through government support.

OPITO works on behalf of industry to positively influence the following issues:

  • The investment needed to support the development of energy skills
  • Ensuring skills are at the heart of all energy policies
  • A more appropriate and less complex implementation model of the Apprenticeship Levy in Scotland
  • Increasing uptake of STEM subjects in schools and showcasing the oil and gas sector
  • Increasing diversity in the oil and gas workforce.

MSPs and Scottish Government ministers are provided with regular updates from OPITO ahead of debates and other parliamentary activity, and we submit written and oral evidence to committees. OPITO also plays an active role on key government advisory boards, such as the Oil and Gas Industry Leadership Group, to ensure skills are at the heart of all energy policy developments.
