Taking a longer term look at the future of UK skills requirements will enable us to up-skill the current workforce in emerging digital roles and ensure industry is prepared to attract the next generation of professionals into our sector. We are working closely with diverse stakeholders to bring forward this blueprint which will support skills diversification and digital transformation.”
OPITO’s Workforce Dynamics Review, launched in May, found that if the sector achieves the ambitions set out in Vision 2035 and capitalises on energy transition opportunities, around 40,000 people will need to be recruited into the sector over the next 20 years and 10,000 of those will be in roles that don’t currently exist.
The new skills strategy is being developed with industry to support skills diversification and digital transformation and to ensure that the future skills supply can fulfil demand.
RGU’s Oil & Gas Institute is engaging with industry and stakeholders to gather relevant data to enable a high-level assessment of the existing and new skills required for job families to create ‘skills demand maps’.
A targeted industry survey will be launched to capture the industry’s demand for skills and capability requirements of the future. Industry workshops are being held with operators and the supply chain to tap into a diverse breadth of knowledge and expertise, including industry specialists, young professionals and apprentices.
The strategy will be launched to industry next year.
