OPITO backs research into sustainability of global industry

MEMBERS of OPITO’s Asia Pacific team joined more than 1,200 experts from 40 countries at the recent Engineering, Science and Technology Conference (ESTCON 2016) held in Kuala Lumpur.

Organised by PETRONAS Technology University (UTP), the event saw industry, academia, government and the public come together to hear about global industry issues, share new ideas and innovations, and discuss the economic development of the nation.

OPITO’s Regional Approval Manager Thiran Nathan presented a cheque to Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, UTP vice chancellor, at the event as part of the international organisation’s ongoing commitment to the industry in Asia Pacific. Regional approvals manager Thiran Nathan also delivered a speech to share and engage in the importance of building a competent and safe workforce.

OPITO International managing director Graham Gall said: “UTP is Malaysia’s leading university, the research and development work that is carried out by the UTP facility delivers the inspiration of world class expertise for the oil and gas sector in which it supports through education and skills.

“The main talking points at ESTCON 2016 centred on collaboration and knowledge sharing, which are recognised attributes aligned with OPITO’s approach to implementing common global safety standards that are proven to deliver positive changes in behaviour and ultimately lead to a safer workforce.

“Backing UTP’s Research and Innovation Fund ensures the sustainability of our industry and will see more young people having the opportunity to get involved in projects which will encourage them to contribute to a future in the oil and gas sector.”
