North East students to experience the world of oil and gas

12th May 2016

OPITO, the skills organisation for the oil and gas industry, is encouraging young people to sign up to its Industry Awareness programme in June. The event to be held in Aberdeen, from 21st – 23rd, aims to broaden the career horizons of youngsters and raise awareness of the innovative oil and gas industry.

The planned timetable of activity allows pupils to spend quality time with oil and gas company personnel and experience first-hand a variety of exciting industry sessions. Activities include taking part in engineering and heavy oil challenges, drafting field development proposals, an interactive tour of an oil rig and operating a drilling simulator.

The companies signed up to open their doors to secondary school students aged 16-years plus from Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray areas include ABB, Aker Solutions, BP, Conoco Phillips, Enermech, Maersk Training, Proserv, Statoil, Sparrows, Stork and TOTAL.

OPITO UK director James Hamilton said the appetite to inspire young people is still very much there: “The industry as a whole has been experiencing many difficulties as it adjusts to the lower oil barrel price and redundancies have been widely reported. However, the oil and gas market has always been cyclical with peaks and troughs of activity and companies have been working hard to adapt their working practices to become more efficient.

“There’s a strong need from the industry to keep attracting young people into the sector and ensure a pipeline of talent continues to come through.”

Vivienne Blevins, guidance teacher at Meldrum Academy in Aberdeenshire, said: “A number of Meldrum Academy senior pupils have been given an opportunity to experience the three-day Industry Awareness event with OPITO. The pupils were asked to identify their area of career interest in order that they are placed in the most relevant work environment.

“As well as meeting industry professionals, the pupils will learn about the range of opportunities available in the oil and gas industry and about the various routes into employment. Previous participants have gone on to make better informed further study and career choices based on their experiences in this valuable placement. It is great that employers are working alongside education and being active in the development of the next generation.”
