Scottish Schools' Hydrogen Challenge

OPITO is proud to sponsor the 2021 Scottish Schools’ Hydrogen Challenge, and support the regional event in Aberdeen, UK.

Over 7,000 pupils from Fort William, Wick, Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Stirling, Edinburgh and Glasgow, who have an interest in a career in green energy, have the opportunity to take part in the hands-on ‘design, build, race, repeat’ team exercise, where participants are tasked with creating the most energy efficient hydrogen fuel cell vehicle using LEGO and miniature, yet fully functional, hydrogen technology.

The challenge is being delivered by partners Arcola Energy, ITM Power and ScottishPower, a partnership formed to help educate people on the importance of green hydrogen in tackling the ongoing climate emergency.

Workshops have been developed to include location specific content, informing pupils of local projects, inspiring the next generation of renewable energy workers, guiding them towards careers in engineering, environmental science, and the development of cleaner, greener transport.

Pupils learn about:

  • Responsible technology: designing for a sustainable future
  • Hydrogen fuel cells: exploring the role that hydrogen could play within a low carbon society
  • Iterative design: using an iterative approach to improve designs over time
  • Renewable energies vs. carbon-based fuels: benefits and challenges of the energy transition
  • Electrolysis: as a method for generating hydrogen
  • Mechanics: gears and ratios, balancing speed and power, friction, and structural strength
  • Local Awareness: informing participants of real-life applications and implications of hydrogen technology in their local area.

An Inter-School City Final took place in each region before the Inter-City Grand Final, which will took in Glasgow as part of COP26. Each participating group’s highest scoring team will be invited to represent their school, competing to win prizes.

The Aberdeen final took place on Friday, September 10th, 2021. Congratulations to the winners, Cults Academy.
